Shuan Hern Lee

12 year old Shuan Hern Lee, a piano prodigy, started piano lessons since he was 2 and half with his dad, Yoon Sen Lee. He has performed in Europe since the age of 3 and has won top prizes at international piano competitions since the age of 4. These competitions include Hong Kong Open, Buono and Bradshaw, American Protégé and American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented – Passion of Music competition in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Shuan Hern has performed in Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall and Steinway Hall in New York by the age of 7.

In March 2012, Shuan Hern won 1st International Piano Competition at Hartford Connecticut, USA. He also won 3rd prize in the Russian Music International Piano Competition in San Jose, USA . In 2013, he won 1st prize at the Astana Piano Passion in Kazakhstan and various 2nd prizes at Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev, Ukraine. In Nov 2013, Shuan Hern won Laureate Prize (Highest honour) at the Sberbank Debut International Music Competition and Festival in Ukraine.

Shuan Hern has also won in many 1st prizes in piano competitions within Australia since 2 and half. He won 1st prize in the Open section of the WA Music Teachers Association Recital and Concerto Awards in 2012. In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 West Australian Pianists Competition, Shuan Hern won the prestigious Best Pianist of the Year Award for three consecutive years and he also won 1st prize at the Open Recital Championship section and 1st prize at the Open Concerto section in 2013 and 2014.

In his music studies, Shuan Hern achieved the 8th grade of the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) piano exam with honours ‘A’ at the age of 7. At the age of 9, Shuan Hern obtained the Associate of the Trinity College (ATCL) of London piano performance recital diploma and in both exams, he is the youngest in the world to obtain these results. At the age of 10, Shuan Hern obtained both the DipABRSM piano performance recital diploma and the Licentiate Diploma in Music for piano performance of the Australian Music Examinations Board with Distinction (L.Mus.A. Dist) and also the AMEB L.Mus. Prize.

Due to his excellence in piano performance, Shuan Hern has appeared regularly on media on many occasions. He appeared on newspapers including West Australian, Eastern Reporters, Echo Newspaper, Australian Chinese Times, Channel 7 Today Tonight, Australia’s Got Talent Show, Sunrise Australia and other TV and radio programmes.

Shuan Hern was also invited to perform at the Australian of the Year Awards 2010. In April 2011, Shuan Hern launched his debut CD album, My Musical Adventures and has performed throughout Australia and overseas including Asia and Sweden in many solo recitals and Gala concerts and also with Mueller International Orchestra and Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, performing concerto works. Shuan Hern has also performed in Asia including the International Kids Festival in Singapore in 2010. He was the only pianist invited to perform at Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), 2011 in Australia. With the kind invitation of Mark Coughlan, Shuan Hern also performs regularly for the Governor and public in the Government House Ballroom Rising Stars Concert series since he was 3 years old. Currently he has over 14 million views on his Youtube clips.

Shuan Hern has also performed in masterclasses for Antonio Pompa Baldi, winner of Cleveland International Piano Competition and Silver medalist of Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; Ingrid Fliter, Silver medalist of Chopin International Piano Competition; Prof Wha Kyung Byun from New England Conservatory of Music (Boston); Krystian Tkaczewski, Director of Chopin International Piano Competition (USA); Sylvia Wang, Associate Prof of Northwestern University (USA); Meng Chieh Liu, lecturer of Curtis Institute (USA); Robert Chamberlain, lecturer of Monash University.

In August 2013, Shuan Hern returned from a solo recital performance at a Chopin fetival in Busko Zdroj, Poland. This was funded by a scholarship from WA's Department of Culture and Arts. Shuan Hern was also in Oxford, where he performed at Holywell Music Room (Europe's first concert hall where Haydn and Handel performed). He was also offered full scholarship to attend the Oxford International Piano Festival and Summer Academy. While in Oxford, he also attended masterclasses with Rustem Hayroudinoff, concert pianist and professor of Royal Academy of Music; the legendary Dame Fanny Waterman, director of Leeds International Piano Competition; Marios Papadoupolous, Artistic Director of Oxford Philomusica; Tessa Nicholson, lecturer of Royal Academy of Music and Mahan Esfahani, conductor, pianist, organist and harpsichordist.

Shuan Hern performed the Grieg's A minor piano concerto with Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in April 2013 under the baton of West Australian Symphony Orchestra's Assistant conductor, Christopher Dragon and also with the Kazakhstan Philharmonic Orchestra (Astana) in May 2013 and the National Symphonic Orchestra of Ukraine in Nov with maestro Vladimir Sirenko. Shuan Hern has been invited to perform with the State Symphony Orchestra “Novaya Rossiya” at the Crescendo Music Festival in Moscow in November 2013 with conductor Alexander Sladkovsky. In December 2013, he performed with the Vienna Pops Orchestra at the New Year's eve concert at Perth Concert Hall under the direction of Mark Coughlan.

Shuan Hern is also a composer where his own piano compositions have won many awards.Taught by Yoon Sen, Shuan Hern's singing talent has won him many awards in competitions too. He has been singing since 3 years of age, being part of Yoon Sen's Christian vocal tracks. He was involved in the renowned St Georges Cathdral Choir under the direction of Joseph Nolan. Shuan Hern also sings in the award winning, The Bridge Junior Choir and in the Nedlands Kingsway Methodist Church choir.

In June 2014, Shuan Hern won the most promising singer award at the Australian Chinese Idol singing competition. Shuan Hern has also been featured in the Voice Kids where he was honoured and delighted to be in Delta Goodrem's team.

In April 2014, Shuan Hern performed a solo recital in Perth and in May, Shuan Hern performed two solo recitals in Astana, Kazahkstan to wonderful critical acclaim. He also received a scholarship to attend Piano Summer School in Colburn School of Music in LA, USA in July 2014.

He also plays the violin and cello and is homeschooled with Australian Christian College.
