Jon_Photo[1].jpgJon Tooby has been playing the cello since the age of seven. At the age of 18 he joined the West Australian Symphony Orchestra as a tutti player where he worked for 20 years.

Jon has used Perth as a base to expand his musical experience both within Australia and overseas. He spent three years studying in London from 1990-94 with Christopher Bunting and William Pleeth. During his time there he worked with the BBC, Halle and London Philharmonic Orchestras and won competitions at the Royal College of Music both as a chamber musician and soloist.

Since returning to Perth in 1994 Jon has worked extensively in chamber music and as a soloist along with his position in the WASO. Jon is a member of the West Australian based cello quartet 'I Cellisti" formed in 1995 which has given over 200 performances within Australia and internationally. In 1999, Jon entered the Australian Young Performers Competition and was a string finalist. He performed the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No1 with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Jon is passionate about contemporary music and has worked with the WASO Contemporary ensemble as well as the group, Elision, based in Queensland. Chamber Music is another of Jon's real passions and he has performed extensively the Piano Trio repertoire. He is a founding member of the Darlington Ensemble which is the resident ensemble for the Darlington Chamber Music Series which is now in its sixth year. Past Chamber Music partners include Piers Lane, Brett Dean, John Harding, Lisa Moore, Natalie Clein and James Boyd.

Jon is also heavily involved as a cello and chamber music tutor and has worked in recent times for AYO and as a chamber music coach at a summer school at the Menhuin School in U.K.

In 2008 Jon started his journey into becoming a conductor. Even though he had conducted over previous years he only really embraced the idea of making a career out of it relatively recently. In 2009 he completed an intensive conducting course at Melbourne University with John Hopkins and has studied with Richard Mills and Richard Gill also. This has led to numerous conducting engagements for 2010 including his appointment as Musical Director of the Perth Concert Band.

In 2010 he took up the post of Young Artist in conducting with the WA Opera where he will collaborate on a number of productions starting with Peter Grimes. With his passion for contemporary music Jon has embarked on the idea of creating a New music ensemble in Perth in collaboration with Tura New Music of which he is the Music Director. Jon also conducted WAYMA's Philharmonic orchestra for its second season.
